How to measure soluble salts using the Elcometer 130 Soluble Salt Profiler

Surface contamination from soluble salts, in particular chloride, sulphate and nitrate ions, has been proven to be one of the most significant contributors to premature coating failure in the protective coatings industry.

One of the most important ways to avoid premature coating failure is to ensure that the surface is prepared correctly and is clean of all contaminants prior to the application of the coating.

There are a number of test methods available to assess the level of soluble salts on a surface. All tests available involve extracting salts from the surface into a solution. The salt content is then measured in “parts per million”.

The Elcometer 130 SSP salt meter uses a sterile filter paper soaked in deionised water to extract salts from the surface. The paper is wetted with a measured volume of water and placed on either a flat or curved surface for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes the paper is removed from the surface and placed on the Elcometer 130 SSP’s contacts, which measure the conductivity of wet paper. The Elcometer 130 SSP salt contamination meter then instantly produces salt contamination measurements which can be displayed in a user definable unit; including µg/cm2, ppm, µS/cm, mS/cm, % Salinity and mg/m2

The Elcometer 130 SSP salt contamination meter provides accurate measurements of the level and density of soluble salts - over 4 times faster than other Bresle equivalent methods.

The multi-point conductivity sensors enable the Elcometer 130 SSP salt contamination meter to accurately display salt concentration, showing exactly where the contamination lies with full colour salt density maps in 2D or 3D.
